Prof. Udaya Annakkage, a senior professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba, Canada visited the Department of Electrical Engineering and delivered a guest talk on “Learning from Everything: The Art of Continuous Growth.” During this talk, Prof. Annakkage shared insights and pieces of advice gathered over his professional life with the final year undergraduate students.

Department of Electrical Engineering Congratulates Prof. Buddhika Jayasekara for his recent appointment as the Chair of IEEE Sri Lanka Section 2023/2024. He was an active member of various IEEE related activities before this appointment. He served as the Vice chair of IEEE Sri Lanka section for 2022/2023 period and as the treasurer of the section during 2014. Prof. Jayasekara is also an active member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation society.

The Inauguration of MSc / PG Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installations, Industrial Automation and PG Certificate Programs of 2022/23 intake was held on Friday, 9^th December 2022 at the Seminar room of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa.

Dr. Asanka S. Rodrigo has been promoted to the post of Professor in Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering (on merit) with effect from 23^rd June 2021.

Phase-1 of the Technology-Enhanced Electrical Engineering Teaching Lab was opened by the Vice Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, on the 30^th of November, 2022. 

The technical paper titled “Low-Cost Ensembling for Deep Neural Network-Based Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM)” based on the work of the undergraduate project team, B. Gowrienanthan, K. D. I. S. Ratnayake, and N. Kiruthihan, jointly supervised by Dr. V. Logeeshan and Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu in the Department of Electrical Engineering has won the Best Paper Award in the category of Neural Networks at the IEEE World Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things Congress held in Seatle, USA, 6-9 June, 2022.

The final report of “Safety and Technical Management Plan of Electricity Licensees” to ascertain the Safe Electrical Practices in the Electricity Sector was handed over to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka by Dr. Asanka Rodrigo. Representatives from CEB and LECO were also present at this event.

EESpire’22 is the official career fair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa which was held consecutively for the third year. It consisted several webinars which were focused on preparing the undergraduates to face the industry confidently. The first webinar was held on the 16^th of May 2022 via zoom. It was headed by the distinguished speaker, Dr.

Dr. Asanka Rodrigo has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Studies for Research Degree at the Faculty of Graduate Studies with the effect of 01/06/2022 for a period of 03 years. Dr. Rodrigo is a former Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering.

The official welcome of the 2020 intake to the Department of Electrical Engineering was held on the 27^th of May 2022 at the Department seminar room. The event was graced by Prof. Udayanga Hemapala, Head-Department of Electrical Engineering, academic staff of the department, students of the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 intakes, including executive committee members of the Electrical Engineering Society.
