A final-year research project titled “Design and Development of a Distributed Voltage Compensator to Enhance the Solar PV Hosting Capacity of LV Distribution Feeders up to the Thermal Limit”, carried out by a final year group of Batch 2020 undergraduates from the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, under the supervision of Prof. J. P. Karunadasa, has been selected as the Best Final Year Research Project for the academic year 2024/2025.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, is proud to announce that Tharindie Pilapitiya, an undergraduate from the 21st batch of the department, represented Sri Lanka at the prestigious Huawei Seeds for the Future 2025 program, held in China.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, proudly honoured the distinguished service of Snr. Prof. N. Wickramarachchi and Prof. J. P. Karunadasa, whose remarkable contributions have shaped the department and the wider academic community. A gathering was held on 13 November 2025 in the department’s Seminar Room to recognize their exceptional careers.

The Department of Electrical Engineering had the honour of welcoming Emeritus Professor Sam Karunaratne for a special lecture delivered to the 2024 intake during their special term. The session was a memorable and inspiring experience for both students and staff.
The event commenced with an insightful introduction by Prof. Anura Wijayapala, who highlighted Prof. Karunaratne’s remarkable contributions to the field of electrical engineering and his enduring legacy as an academic leader.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, extends its heartfelt appreciation to Prof. Anura Wijayapala for his three years of exceptional service as the Head of the Department.
Under his visionary leadership, the department witnessed remarkable progress in academic excellence, research advancement, industry collaboration, and student development. His dedication, steady guidance, and commitment to uplifting the EE community have left a lasting and meaningful impact.

On 2nd October 2025, the Department of Electrical Engineering organized the annual Cricket Fiesta, bringing together students and staff for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.
The event, held at the University Grounds, featured teams from all four student batches alongside a staff team, all participating with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. After a series of exciting matches, the 2022 batch team emerged as the champions of the tournament.

The IEEE Power & Energy Society Sri Lanka Chapter, in collaboration with EESoc and the IEEE PES UoM Student Chapter, successfully hosted the workshop “Transforming the Power Sector with AI” at the University of Moratuwa on 11th October 2025.
The program began with an insightful session by Dr. V. Logeeshan on the growing need for AI in power systems, followed by a hands-on workshop conducted by Eng. Vidura Bandara, focusing on practical AI applications.

The 20 Batch of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa came together with academic and non-academic staff for a memorable Farewell Party on November 7, 2025, at Rock House, Piliyandala. Beginning at 6.00 PM onwards, the evening created a lively and warm atmosphere as students and staff celebrated their journey together.

Prof. Buddhika Jayasekara has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, succeeding Prof. Anura Wijayapala, with effect from 20th October 2025.
Prof. Jayasekara graduated from the University of Moratuwa with a B.Sc. Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering and completed his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He pursued his Ph.D. in Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Saga, Japan, in 2010.

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa officially welcomed its 2024 intake on 8th September 2025 at the Department Seminar Room. The ceremony featured opening remarks by Dr. Rasara Samarasinghe, Semester 2 Coordinator, followed by an address from the Head of Department, Prof. Anura Wijayapala, highlighting the department’s vision, opportunities, and student responsibilities.
