Visit of Dr. Leshan Uggalla. University of South Wales

Dr. Leshan Uggalla, Senior Lecturer at the University of South Wales (Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, Engineering Research and Innovation Group), U.K. visited the University of Moratuwa (UoM) on February 21, 2025. During his visit, he engaged in a discussion with the University of Moratuwa representatives including Prof. Ruwan Gopura, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Dr. Chulantha Jayawardena, Acting Director of International Relations and Dr. Gayan Piyasena, Senior Lecturer, Department of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine The primary focus of the discussion was exploring potential collaborations between the two institutions.

Dr. Uggalla highlighted the increasing global investment in space and satellite technology, emphasizing its role as a rapidly emerging industry contributing significantly to the GDP of developed nations. He pointed out that research and collaborations in this field could begin with relatively small investments, enabling UoM staff and students to contribute to this cutting-edge sector.

He outlined several key opportunities available at the University of South Wales that could be advantageous for UoM, including:

  1. Student Exchanges – Providing students with international exposure and research opportunities.

  2. Staff Exchanges – Facilitating knowledge-sharing and professional development.

  3. Higher Studies for UoM Staff – A unique program allowing UoM staff to pursue PhDs and other advanced studies at the University of South Wales while continuing their full-time roles in Sri Lanka, requiring only occasional visits to the UK.

  4. Student Projects – Encouraging collaborative research initiatives between students from both institutions.

  5. Joint Grant Applications

  6. Joint PhDs and Supervision

  7. Addressing the Shortage of Academic Staff – Supporting the delivery of the Aeronautical Engineering program at UoM Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering through shared expertise.

  8. Stakeholder meetings and policy development

Following the discussions, Dr. Uggalla delivered an insightful lecture titled “The Space Revolution: Opportunities, Innovation, and the Future.”

The visit marked an important step towards fostering international partnerships and advancing research in space technology, robotics, and engineering, opening new avenues for collaboration between the University of Moratuwa and the University of South Wales.
