Department of Medicine & Mental Health

The Department of Medicine and Mental Health is one of the founding departments of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Moratuwa. It plays a key role in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, integrating clinical expertise with evidence-based education.

The department provides academic and clinical leadership through its proposed University Medical and Psychiatry Units at the Teaching Hospital Kalutara. In addition to clinical teaching, the department is engaged in active research, public engagement, and mental health advocacy.

Working closely with other departments and faculties of the University of Moratuwa, the department is committed to advancing the fields of medicine and mental health through innovation, collaboration, and a strong foundation in scientific evidence.

Contribution to the MBBS Program

The department contributes to the planning, coordination, and delivery of nearly every component of the MBBS undergraduate curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the Clinical Sciences Stream.

It also supports the Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Community Health, Personal and Professional Development, and Medical Technology streams, by developing and teaching modules in these areas.

Clinical teaching includes hands-on, bedside instruction in medical wards, clinics, procedure rooms, and emergency care units. These activities are conducted at the Teaching Hospital Kalutara, Base Hospital Horana, and Base Hospital Panadura, from first year through to final year.
