Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Moratuwa plays a critical role in medical education by bridging basic sciences and clinical practice. Pharmacology is the science of drugs and their interactions with living systems, and it forms the foundation for safe and effective medical treatment.

The department is responsible for providing students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to understand the principles of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, rational prescribing, and adverse drug reactions. It also emphasizes the ethical and evidence-based use of medications in clinical settings.

Teaching activities span across both pre-clinical and clinical phases. In Phase 1, foundational pharmacological concepts are introduced and integrated with system-based modules such as Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, and Nervous System. In later stages, emphasis is placed on therapeutic applications, case-based learning, and clinical decision-making.

Educational Approach

The department employs interactive teaching methods including lectures, small-group tutorials, pharmacology simulations, prescription-writing sessions, and student-led seminars. Students are also guided through understanding national drug policies and essential medicine lists.

Vision for the Future

The Department of Pharmacology aims to develop into a center of excellence in pharmacological education, research, and innovation. Future plans include expanding clinical pharmacology exposure, incorporating pharmacovigilance training, and fostering collaborations with national regulatory bodies and pharmaceutical research institutions.

Through its commitment to integrated learning and patient safety, the department contributes significantly to producing compassionate, competent, and responsible medical professionals.
