The Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Moratuwa is dedicated to teaching, learning, and research in two of the most essential disciplines that link basic science with clinical application and medico-legal practice.
Pathology
Pathology is the study of disease—its causes, mechanisms, and effects on the human body. The department introduces students to General Pathology, Systemic Pathology, Hematology, Clinical Pathology, and Cytopathology. It provides a strong foundation in understanding the morphological and biochemical changes that accompany diseases.
Through integration into system-based modules such as Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Renal, Endocrine, and Nervous System, students learn to correlate clinical symptoms with pathological findings and laboratory results. Teaching methods include lectures, histopathology slide reviews, case-based discussions, and visits to diagnostic labs.
Forensic Medicine
Forensic Medicine plays a vital role in applying medical knowledge to legal matters. This component of the department covers topics such as injury assessment, cause and time of death, toxicology, medical ethics, sexual offences, and legal responsibilities of medical practitioners.
Students are trained in interpreting forensic evidence, medico-legal documentation, and understanding their duties as future doctors within the legal framework of Sri Lanka. Practical sessions, courtroom observations, and exposure to postmortem examinations are included to provide applied learning experiences.
Integrated Teaching Approach
Both pathology and forensic medicine are delivered using a student-centered, problem-based approach. The department promotes active learning through tutorials, small group sessions, digital histology platforms, and simulated medico-legal case workups.
As part of its vision, the department aims to further develop pathology and forensic labs, introduce molecular pathology techniques, and promote research on disease trends and injury patterns in local contexts.
With a strong focus on academic excellence and relevance to clinical practice, the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine prepares students to diagnose disease accurately and fulfill their professional and legal responsibilities confidently.
