MSc / PG Diploma in Materials Science

The M.Sc. programme is designed to deepen the knowledge of materials science for individuals with an engineering or physical science background. It aims to meet industry demands and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. Conducted part-time, the programme enables students to continue their careers while advancing their expertise and qualifications.

Teaching is delivered by experienced staff, alongside academics from other universities and institutions. Industry professionals are also invited as visiting lecturers to cover modules relevant to current industrial practices.

All lectures, practical sessions, presentations, industrial visits, and examinations are scheduled during weekends. The programme comprises a mix of compulsory and elective modules, as well as a research project (available only for M.Sc. candidates). The research project’s primary objective is to provide hands-on training in essential research and development techniques, equipping students with problem-solving skills for industry.

Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from the University of Moratuwa;
  • OR any other four-year degree in engineering, science, or technology in a relevant field from a recognized university;
  • OR any three-year degree in engineering, science, or technology in a relevant field from a recognized university, AND a minimum of one year of relevant experience;
  • OR recognized membership of a professional institution (obtained through an academic route), plus at least one year of relevant experience after obtaining membership.

Duration

  • M.Sc.: Two years (part-time)
  • PG Dip: One year (part-time)

You may also submit the duly completed application to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa, between 8.30 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. on weekdays.

Application closing date (18th July 2025)

All duly filled applications, along with a paying-in-voucher for Rs.5,000/= drawn in favour of ‘University of Moratuwa, Account No.70993353, Bank of Ceylon, Katubedda, as application processing fee, shall reach the Head/Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Moratuwa, 10400, on or before 18th July 2025.
