As part of the CH4215 – Environmental Engineering and Management course, 18 young environmental engineering undergraduates from the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa, participated in a series of field visits to key environmental facilities. On 27th March 2025, the students visited the Rathmalana Wastewater Treatment Plant, coordinated by Dr. Dilhara Sethunga, where they observed the full treatment process—from preliminary to tertiary stages—gaining practical insights into municipal wastewater management, water quality control, and regulatory compliance.
On 28th March 2025, the group visited Sisili Hanaro Encare (Pvt) Ltd, a clinical waste treatment facility, and Western Power (Pvt) Ltd, a waste-to-energy plant. These visits, also coordinated by Dr. Dilhara Sethunga and accompanied by Dr. Kalindu Fernando, Dr. Duleeka Gunarathne, and Prof. C.S. Kalpage, provided students with exposure to advanced waste treatment technologies and renewable energy generation from municipal solid waste. These hands-on learning experiences directly aligned with the course’s core objective of understanding environmental pollutant management techniques and highlighted the vital role engineers play in developing sustainable environmental solutions
